Predictive modelling activities

 WP9 targets the use of modelling activities to capture the multiscale evolution of damage in ATF clads & joints, thereby developing reliable predictive tools for the long-term in-service material behaviour. Since modelling can help to rationalise experimental data, WP9 makes an invaluable link between microstructure, properties and processing, thus facilitating material optimisation (WP1-WP3) based on the material response to application-relevant conditions (WP5-WP7).

The diverse modelling activities focus on many aspects of in-service material degradation associated with thermomechanical loading, interaction with the coolant, and irradiation-induced damage. The selected activities aim at progressing beyond the state-of-the-art in predicting the in-service damage evolution at multiple scales (from atomic to macroscale) using different modelling methodologies (atomistic, thermodynamic, finite element).

The development of accurate models with predictive capacity relies on the input of reliable experimental data from WP4-WP6 & WP8. Model verification, i.e., confirmation of its correct implementation with respect to the conceptual model, and validation of the model’s accuracy in representing real systems will be based on the experimental data.
