HSU Hamburg was founded in 1972 as one of two Federal Universities in Germany to enable officers of the Federal Armed Forces to attain an academic degree by providing a science-based education for their service, thus improving their career prospects. Education and research follows the rules of the state of Hamburg. Teaching as well as technical infrastructure at HSU guarantees fast education to finish a bachelor degree within two and quarter years and a Master's degree within overall four years. At present, HSU has about 2500 students, who are educated by 100 Professors.

Embedded into the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the research at the Institute of Materials Technology at HSU (http://www.hsu-hh.de/werkstoffkunde/) focuses on surface technology and on associated phenomena in phase transformations of metal alloys and composite materials. The institute has pioneered the field of cold- or kinetic-spraying since the late 1990’s and holds an internationally-recognized expertise on exploring the basic deposition mechanisms and on developing applications as well as spraying equipment, the latter both in close cooperation with industries. Associated research work combines computational fluid dynamics, modelling of deformation and bonding, "in-flight" diagnostics, and various material and surface characterization techniques. The HSU team has a well-established expertise in fine-tuning spraying techniques for new material developments and was the first to successfully deposit MAX-phase coatings by cold spraying.

The HSU contribution to IL TROVATORE focuses on: WP2 – MAX phase coating deposition on commercial clads.
