The Laboratory of Mechanics and Technology, LMT, located on Cachan campus, is a joint laboratory (160 members) involving ENS Cachan and CNRS. CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) is the French National organization for scientific research. ENS Cachan (École Normale Supérieure de Cachan) is a prestigious public institution of research and higher education, founded in 1912, with 2000 postgraduate students, including 300 PhD students. Its 390 research staff members (260 researchers and Professors, 80 administrative and technical staff, 50 post-doctoral staff) provide a dynamic scientific environment open to innovation, with a deep interaction between research and education. ENS Cachan is also a founding member of Paris-Saclay University (UPS), a 5 B€ investment of the French Government intended to create a global-scale University by the federation of 18 higher educational institutions and research organisations, including ENS Cachan and CNRS.
The research at LMT deals with the Mechanics of Composites and Materials, under various loading conditions, including the contribution of the environment to damage. It is well known for its research activity in the field of the mechanical behaviour of composites and structures from various viewpoints, including experimental approaches, modelling and computational mechanics. It is very active in the field of thermomechanical behaviour of composite materials, for which inductive as well as deductive approaches are being developed. A part of interest is focusing now on durability, virtual testing and design of numerical composites on the basis of experimental investigation, physics based modelling and stochastic processes.
ENSC researchers involved in IL TROVATORE possess a long experience in the field of testing and modelling long fibre-reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs), they have expertise in microstructure-property relations, and they are active in various Standardization Committees. Within IL TROVATORE, LMT will participate through the research group on Composites. This research group will bring into the project their know-how on the characterisation and modelling of fibres and multifilament tows, an R&D activity that will contribute to the future development of test methods (testing standards) for SiC/SiC composites (WP10).
